Transforming Energy Data into Business Results

The Smart Grid: everybody is talking about it, but no one has really yet to see it. What exactly does "smart" mean anyway? Power will still flow over copper cables connected to the home. Overgrown tree limbs, lightning, ice, and squirrels will still cause outages. So how does overlaying the entire distribution network with fancy new measurement devices make it smarter?

The real value in smart grid technology is its ability to empower two groups of people: those who operate, maintain, and build electric and gas networks and the customers they serve. For network providers, advanced metering can streamline billing, minimize lost revenue, increase network reliability and efficiency, and ultimately reduce both capital and operating costs. For customers, this same information can help them better understand their usage, compare themselves to others, and track progress over time as they attempt to improve efficiency and lower their bills. The key ingredient for both groups is not the smart device itself, but rather the data it generates.

DataRaker’s mission is to harness all of the new terabytes of data produced by "smart" meters, combine them with legacy systems and other useful data to provide context, and distill it into useful information that can help utility staff and customers control costs from the power plant to the light switch. While our technology is incredibly powerful and exciting, its only purpose is to generate simple, practical, and actionable results. Just as insulating doors and windows is a more practical way to help customers reduce energy bills than by controlling their plasma TV, so too can utilities reduce costs and improve customer service by fully leveraging their "smart meter" data before investing too much in home area networks or other riskier technologies.
